Yale Concert Band’s spring concert features tributes to the human spirit and river life

A symphony based on the writings of Helen Keller, a three-movement musical portrait of Mississippi delta life, and a performance with the John Winthrop Middle School 8th Grade Band from Deep River, Connecticut, are among the highlights of the Yale Concert Band’s spring concert, taking place on Friday, April 7.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets.

The program features Mark Camphouse’s “Symphony from Ivy Green,” which is based on writings by Helen Keller and will be sung by mezzo-soprano Janna Baty; Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’ “Danzón No. 2,” and William Grant Still’s “From the Delta,” during which listeners will hear a chain gang singing its way through hard labor. The John Winthrop Middle School 8th Grade Band, directed by Laura Traver, will join the Yale Concert Board for a performance of Ed Huckeby’s “By the Rivers of Babylon.” Also on the program are Ticheli’s “Postcard” and Sousa’s “Washington Post March.”
