The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has moved to renovated space in Sterling Memorial Library designed to create a more unified and collaborative environment for students, faculty, and postdocs as they work with the center’s staff on teaching, tutoring, writing, and technology initiatives.

The CTL promotes equitable and engaged teaching throughout the university and supports students across the curriculum as they take ownership of their learning. The new space in Sterling, which the center moved to on Jan. 11, is directly tied to President Peter Salovey’s vision for teaching excellence at Yale, as outlined in his inaugural address on Oct. 13, 2013, when he said:

“I emphasize our educational mission because we are in the midst of a teaching and learning revolution. How we respond — how we stay true to our best traditions while pioneering new frontiers — this is the challenge before us.”

The CTL — led by Deputy Provost Scott Strobel, Executive Director Jennifer Frederick, and Executive Director for Digital Education Lucas Swineford — was established in 2014 and was previously housed in the Hall of Graduate Studies and 35 Broadway. The new space allows the CTL staff members to collaborate in a central part of campus as they advance the educational mission of the university.

“Locating the CTL in Sterling Memorial Library increases access to a wealth of resources,” said Frederick. “Our Sterling space is designed to prioritize collaboration and a unified Yale. The central importance of teaching and learning at Yale is signaled by placing us in the heart of campus.”

The CTL’s new home includes a technology learning studio, several flexible classroom spaces, and one-on-one tutoring rooms.

The renovated space occupies 24,000 square feet of the library, including a corridor connecting the newly opened 301 York St. entrance to the nave.

The Center for Teaching and Learning will host a grand opening ceremony on Friday, Jan. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 301 York St. Strobel invites the entire Yale community to join the celebration as he unveils the new CTL.
