Farai Chideya, a multimedia journalist and blogger for fivethirtyeight.com, will speak at Yale on Thursday, Oct. 27, as a Poynter Fellow in Journalism.

“How can you vote for that candidate? Understanding America’s voters: A conversation with Farai Chideya and Eitan Hersh” will take place at 2:45 p.m. in Rm. B217 at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies, 77 Prospect St. The event is free and open to the public.

Since 1996, Chideya has covered every presidential election. Currently, Chideya is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. In addition to blogging and penning a series on voters for fivethirtyeight.com, she is also a columnist on citizen and consumer issues in the digital age for TheIntercept.com.

Chideya previously hosted NPR’s “News and Notes,” was a reporter for ABC News, a political analyst for CNN, a host for the Oxygen Network, and a reporter for Newsweek magazine. A 1990 graduate of Harvard University and a spring 2012 fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics, Chideya and her colleagues have won awards including a National Education Reporting Award, a North Star News Prize, and a special award from the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association for coverage of AIDS.

Hersh is assistant professor of political science at Yale. His teaching and research focus on elections in the United States. Hersh studies campaign strategy, voting behavior, and election administration. His current work examines the effects of information and technology on candidate behavior.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus journalists from a wide variety of media outlets who have made significant contributions to their field. Among recent Poynter fellows are Kenneth Richieri, Ben Brody, and Christophe Boltanski.
