Three major upcoming events at the Schwarzman Center will give students a taste of the kind of programming to expect when the Center reopens in 2020 after a major renovation and expansion.

The first event, titled “Food Conversations,” (see event details) to be held on Oct. 27, will bring four leading chefs to campus for an elegant meal and thought-provoking dialogue that turns the Commons in the Schwarzman Center into a blended classroom, laboratory, and pop-up restaurant.

The second event, titled, “Blackstar Rising & The Purple Reign: Celebrating the Legacies of David Bowie and Prince,” planned for Jan. 25-28, 2017, will explore the careers of two singular musicians who changed the face of popular music culture in the second half of the 20th century. The program will bring together scholars, musicians, filmmakers, artists, journalists, and students for discussion, critical listening, and musical performances that explore ways in which popular music can create liberating spaces where audacious cultural and social changes and transformations might flourish.

The third event, “Jazz: A Celebration of America’s Sound,” to be held March 10 and 11, 2017, will be a two-day festival featuring headliner Wynton Marsalis, an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture.  Also featured will be the five-time GRAMMY award-winning Maria Schneider Orchestra and Anat Cohen, a clarinetist-saxophonist who has an international following. In addition to the concerts, the festival will offer a jazz improvisation clinic with Marsalis and a performance by the Yale Jazz Ensemble.

Schwarzman Center events are designed to embrace diverse tastes and amplify the experiences and talents of all members of the Yale community, mixing the familiar with the new, and the aesthetic and the intellectual.

These events reflect the goal of transforming student life at Yale by creating a vibrant social and intellectual hub through daily activities and major periodic events that will unite the entire community.
