Follow some Pathways to Mindfulness at the Yale University Art Gallery in celebration of the new Happy and Bob Doran Tea Gate created by artist and Zen Buddhist teacher Paul Discoe. Anne Dutton, mindfulness specialist at the Yale Stress Center, will lead a guided formal meditation session focused on the theme of dharma, or “gateless gates.” Free. Watch a Javanese Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) performance of “Arjunå in Meditation” accompanied by the Yale Javanese Gamelan Ensemble. The story is about a powerful demon king who threatens to destroy the abode of the gods, and the knight, Arjunå, who wants to destroy the evil of the world. The dhalang manipulates the puppets, delivers all the dialogue in many voices, describes the scene, comments on the meaning, and signals the orchestra what and when to play. Free. View art in new ways at the Family Program of Stories and Art, featuring folktales, myths, and stories from around the world that highlight unique objects in the Yale University Art Gallery collection. Join an interactive Highlights Tour of the Yale University Art Gallery’s history, architecture, and encyclopedic collection. The tours will focus on a handful of objects chosen to showcase both the permanent collection and special exhibitions currently on view. No two tours are the same. Free. 1111 Chapel St. 1:30 p.m.
Sit back and watch the current show, “Dynamic Earth,” at the Leitner Family Observatory and Planetarium. Part of the Yale Department of Astronomy, the planetarium is dedicated to education, outreach, and student research, and is open to the public every Sunday afternoon for weekly shows. Discover the strange but true story of the crusade against crime and horror comic books at the new exhibit Senators, Sinners, and Supermen: The 1950s Comic Book Scare and Juvenile Delinquency. In the spring of 1954, amid the Cold War paradox between nuclear threat and suburban bliss, Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee led a crusade against crime and horror comic books. Free.
