Yale Symphony Orchestra to perform its 50th anniversary celebration finale

The Yale Symphony Orchestra’s (YSO) 50th season finale will take place on Saturday, April 16, and will feature a guest appearance by its former music director, John Mauceri, and pianist Idil Biret, as well as a world premiere by a YSO alumnus.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Woolsey Hall, 500 College St. Advance tickets are $12 and $17; $3 and $6 for students. General admission tickets at the door are $15 and $20; $6 and $9 for students.

Mauceri conducted the YSO from 1968 to 1974 and will conduct the YSO in its performance of his own arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s “Celebrations” from “Mass.” The Yale Glee Club, directed by Jeffrey Douma, and the Elm City Girls Choir, directed by Rebecca Rosenbaum, will sing, and Kyle Guglielmo will be the celebrant.

Biret, who performed with the YSO in Turkey in 2010 and recorded the complete Hindemith Piano Concerti with the orchestra on the Naxos label in 2013, will perform the 1945 Hindemith Piano Concerto.

Also on the program are Charles Ives’ “The Unanswered Question”; the world premiere of YSO alumnus Daniel Schlosberg’s “Small Talk”; Sir Edward Elgar’s “Land of Hope and Glory” from “Coronation Ode”; Adam Guettel’s “Overture to a Fairy Tale Adventure,” and Richard Strauss’ “Festival Prelude.” These works will be conducted by YSO music director Toshiyuki Shimada.

The YSO will repeat the concert on Thursday, April 21, at 8 p.m. in Stern Auditorium of Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall in New York.
