The YSO celebrates 50 years with music, an exhibition, and a film screening

The Yale Symphony Orchestra (YSO) continues the celebration of its golden anniversary with a series of events including an exhibition, a film screening, and concerts.

An exhibition featuring 50 years of concert posters is on view through April 20 at the Study at Yale, 1157 Chapel St. The exhibition features early work by noted graphic designers of the 20^th and 21^st centuries. The show is open to the public free of charge.

Events taking place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12 and 13 will include:

• A screening of the 1973 European premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass” will be held on Friday at 9:30 p.m. in Rm. 117, Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall, 1 Prospect St. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be hosted by John Mauceri, who led the YSO from 1968 to 1974.

• On Saturday, a Yale Alumni Showcase will feature returning members of the Yale Symphony Orchestra performing a recital of a variety of chamber and solo works in. The concert will be held at 2 p.m. in Sudler Hall, William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St. It is free and open to the public.

• Mauceri will conduct the orchestra in a performance of works by Bach, Wagner, and Strauss at a 50th anniversary concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. Tickets for the concert are still available.

The YSO will conclude its 50th anniversary season with a finale concert on April 16 in Woolsey Hall that will be reprised on April 21 in Carnegie Hall. The New Haven concert will take place at 8 p.m. and will feature Mauceri and current music director Toshiyuki Shimada leading the orchestra in a concert that pays homage to the history of both the Yale Symphony and the university. The event, which will feature works by Yale composers and world-renowned composers with links to the university, “is a testimony to the incredible role an extracurricular orchestra in a liberal arts college has had on the culture of American classical music,” says Brian Robinson, manager of the YSO. Tickets are still available for the Woolsey Hall and the Carnegie Hall concerts.
