Special days and nights at the Connecticut Open

You really don’t have to be a tennis fan to have fun at the Connecticut Open (although it certainly helps). In addition to nine days of on-court action, the all-women’s tennis tournament features food, music, and fun for people of all ages — plus special fan appreciation events.

Here is a look at some of the special happenings at the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, taking place Aug. 21–29 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, located on Derby Avenue.

For the kids: Aetna Kids Day, beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23, will feature tennis clinics, giveaways, autograph sessions, and face painting by Animate My Face (11 a.m.–4 p.m.). The first 1,000 kids will receive a goody bag.

Win U.S. Open tickets: Test out all types of Wilson racquets and compete in the Burn Challenge, a rigorous one-time test of skill, agility, and fitness. Take the top spot as the “world’s best baseliner” and win a two-day, one-night trip for you and a guest to the 2015 U.S. Open, where you’ll meet tennis star Kei Nishikori. The Wilson Junior and Demo & Burn Challenge will take place daily Aug. 21-28.

Get physical: Open every day to fans of all ages, the Aetna Fitzone features an inflatable obstacle course, “Shoot for Hoops,” mini-golf, a ping pong table, a fast-serve cage, arts and crafts, and tennis sports courts for youngsters under age 10.

Honor the military: There will be several events paying tribute to those in the armed services on Monday, Aug. 24. All members of the military and veterans will receive two complimentary tickets on United Technologies Military Appreciation Night, plus access to hospitality services. There will also be a USO Show Troupe Performance on the Connecticut Stage, flags for the first 2,000 fans, an Honor and Remember flag ceremony at 6:30 p.m., and an opportunity for fans to take part in the Express Your Thanks campaign.

Cheer for the Huskies. Celebrate an evening of UConn pride by wearing your best Huskie swag during an evening tribute to the 2015 UConn Women’s Basketball Team on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Jonathan, the Husky mascot, will also be in attendance. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a UConn Women’s National Basketball Championship poster.

Celebrate Girl Power. The night of Wednesday, Aug. 26, will be dedicated to inspiring, empowering, and promoting mentoring opportunities for young women and girls. Girl Power Night will include talks and tennis clinics led by women tennis players, and presentations by other role models.

Watch the guys compete: This year’s Men’s Legends Event will pair off James Blake and Andy Roddick on Thursday, Aug. 27, and John McEnroe and Jim Courier on Friday, Aug. 28.

Et cetera. Throughout the week, you can savor offerings from the best of local food trucks —with food choices ranging from freshly prepared gourmet grilled cheese to pizza, salads, and seafood; enjoy nightly music before the evening matches; meet the players at daily autograph sessions; and watch the U.S. Open National Playoffs Championship featuring men’s and women’s singles (Friday, Aug. 21), men’s and women’s doubles (Tuesday and Friday, Aug. 25 and 28), and mixed doubles (Wednesday-Saturday, Aug. 26–29).
