President Peter Salovey and Provost Benjamin Polak shared the report of the Presidential Carbon Charge Task Force with the Yale community on April 20.

Led by Sterling Professor of Economics William Nordhaus, the task force recommended that Yale adopt carbon pricing as part of its campus sustainability efforts. Salovey appointed the task force in August 2014 as part of a series of sustainability initiatives.

The President and Provost said Yale would implement a pilot project on carbon pricing as an incentive to reduce Yale’s carbon emissions.

The task force concluded that a carbon charge would “provide appropriate incentives for decision makers to reduce emissions from carbon-intensive activities” and “focus policies on carbon pricing as a superior tool for providing decentralized incentives and thereby engage students, faculty, and staff.”

A community forum on the task force report will be held on Earth Day, April 22, at 5 p.m. in the Luce Hall auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Ave.

A copy of the report is available online.
