Beinecke Library to be canvas for exhibit highlighting Yale discoveries

Lux: Ideas Through Light — an undergraduate-run, three-night projection exhibition — will feature artistic interpretations set against the backdrop of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, 121 Wall St.

A team of undergraduates conceived of the interdisciplinary event while looking for a way to showcase the ideas and discoveries of the university through an artistic medium. It will be held 8-10 p.m. Friday-Sunday, April 10-12.

“Lux: Ideas Through Light” is a collaborative effort that is supported by the Yale Digital Media Center for the Arts, the Yale School of Drama, and the Yale College Dean’s Office. Numerous schools and departments from across the university have contributed to the project as academic collaborators, advisers, and designers.

“Given our diverse experiences in theatrical design and large-scale event production, the medium seemed natural — the ephemeral nature of projected light seemed to be an appropriate way to communicate intangible academic ideas,” says Douglas Streat ’16, one of the curators of the event. “Similarly, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library could not to be a more perfect canvas. As a cultural and architectural landmark now in its final month before closing for renovation, the Beinecke stands at the crossroads of the heart of the university’s mission to teach, inspire, and learn.”
