‘Father of Head Start’ and Zigler Center leader reflects on Head Start at 50

When Edward Zigler — widely known as the “Father of Head Start” and founder of the Yale Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy — celebrates Head Start’s 50th anniversary in Washington, D.C. on March 31, he will see many “Head Start Babies,” among them one he entrusted with his own life.
Yale emeritus professor Edward Zigler reflects on his role in creating the federal Head Start program 50 years ago. He is joined by his faculty colleague and current Yale Zigler Center director Walter Gilliam, and former Yale graduate student Katherine Marsland ’05 Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Southern Connecticut State University.
