Reporter David Epstein to discuss ‘Genius in Sports’

David Epstein, investigative reporter for ProPublica, will give a talk titled “Genius in Sports: Is it Nature or Nurture?” on Monday, March 30 as a Poynter Fellow in Journalism.

David Epstein, investigative reporter for ProPublica, will give a talk titled “Genius in Sports: Is it Nature or Nurture?” on Monday, March 30 as a Poynter Fellow in Journalism.

The talk, sponsored by the Poynter Fellow in Journalism, will take place 11:35 a.m.–12:50 p.m. in the Presidents Room of Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. The event is free and open to the public.

Prior to joining ProPublica, Epstein was a senior writer at Sports Illustrated where he co-authored the 2009 report that Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez had used steroids. At ProPublica, Epstein covers mostly energy and environment issues, as well as sports science.

His writing has received numerous awards, including the 2012 Society of Professional Journalists prize for science reporting for his story on the genetics of athletic performance. He was a 2011 Livingston Award finalist for stories on perceptual skills and pain in sports. He is also the author of The New York Times bestseller “The Sports Gene.”

Epstein has master’s degrees in environmental science and journalism from Columbia University and has lived in the Sonoran desert, on a ship in the Pacific Ocean, and in the Arctic.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus journalists from a wide variety of media outlets who have made significant contributions to their field. Among recent Poynter fellows are Janet Mock, Seymour Hersh, and Nick Kristof.
