A French political adviser and diplomat, Lamy was head of the WTO for two successive terms 2005–2013. There he chaired the Doha Round of negotiations and witnessed a rapidly changing international trade environment. Between 1999 and 2004, he was commissioner for trade at the European Commission under Romano Prodi. He began his career in the French civil service at the Inspection Générale des Finances and at the Treasury. He then became an adviser to the Finance Minister Jacques Delors, and subsequently to Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy.

Lamy is on campus to attend the European Student Conference at Yale.
