Steven T. Berry

After receiving his B.A. in economics at Northwestern University, Berry attended the University of Wisconsin where he was awarded his M.S. and Ph.D. in economics. He has taught at the University of Wisconsin, and, since 1989, has conducted research at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He came to Yale in 1988 as an assistant professor of economics; in 1999, he was appointed the James Burrows Moffatt Professor of Economics.

Berry has contributed dozens of articles and chapters to edited volumes and journals on topics that range from new tools for the statistical analysis of microeconomic data to the applied empirical study of competition in airline, auto, and media markets. In April 2014, he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is an elected fellow of the Econometric Society and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His honors include the Frisch Medal of the Econometric Society.

The David Swensen Professor of Economics was established as a result of the Swensen Initiative, which was organized by a group of alumni and friends to raise funds in David Swensen’s honor in recognition of his contributions to Yale as the university’s chief investment officer since 1985. A portion of those funds established this chair in the economics department, where Swensen was a student and taught for more than thirty years.
