Week Ender: Happenings in August 2014

In addition to the many ongoing exhibits in the museums and galleries at Yale, August is a great month to enjoy a show, a tennis match, music, and theater.

Watch world-class tennis at the Connecticut Open. Eight of the world’s top-20 female tennis players — including 2014 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova — will compete in the 2014 tournament. In addition, fans can enjoy men’s tennis as James Blake, Andy Roddick, and Jim Courier will participate in the first-ever Connecticut Open Legends Event. Other events include Aetna Kids Day, USPTA Free Lessons, and Military Appreciation Night. CT Tennis Center at Yale, Rt. 34/Central Ave., near the Yale Bowl, New Haven. Aug. 15-23.

Visit the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and hear music by Ravel, Mozart, Françaix, Haydn, Fauré, Panetti, and Dvořák, among others. Concerts continue through Aug. 16 and culminate in one of the highlights of the season — a choral performance by 24 professional singers from around the world in a wide variety of choral selections from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Volunteer at the Yale Farm. No farming experience is necessary to participate in Yale Farm Summer Workdays. Just show up and join in — harvesting or planting — everyone is welcome. Free. Yale Farm, 345 Edwards St. Fridays and Saturdays until Aug. 16, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

See the latest cabaret show, Middletown, with performances through Aug. 10. Written by Will Eno, this play “contemplates the big questions of existence, reflecting on birth, death and the messy middle in-between,” note the producers. “Eno’s characters eloquently and wryly articulate the fears, anxieties, and regrets that characterize our contemporary experience.” Yale Summer Cabaret, 217 Park St. Tuesday-Saturday, 8 p.m.; Sundays at 7 p.m. 

Enjoy a four-day festival of new short plays by six playwrights whose work was first nurtured and developed at the Yale School of Drama. Luke Harlan and Jessica Holt direct Summer Shorts: A Festival of New Voices. Yale Cabaret, 217 Park St. Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 14-17 at 8 p.m.; additional shows at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. 

Celebrate Summer’s Last Roar at the Peabody Museum on Saturday, Aug. 23. The day’s highlights will include the exhibition Tiny Titans: Dinosaur Eggs and Babies in its last week on view, and a new puppet show about Roxi Fox trying to find the right parents for a hatching dinosaur egg, presented at 11 a.m. and noon. Also featured are interactive SciCarts and an instant-winner game where everyone wins a prize. Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave. Saturday, Aug. 23, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Enjoy Friday evening carillon concerts on Aug. 1, 8, and 15 as the Summer Carillon Concert Series continues. Old Campus, directly across from Harkness Tower on High Street, is one of the best listening locations. Free. 7 p.m.

Learn something new about Yale — go on a Campus Tour. Departing from the Visitor Center, tours of Yale’s historic and architecturally distinct campus cover the Central Campus area, and last about an hour and 15 minutes. Free. Monday-Friday, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday 1:30 p.m.
