See the film Intimate Stranger — a documentary by filmmaker Alan Berliner about his maternal grandfather. According to the event organizers, Berliner has constructed a “poetic and emotional jigsaw puzzle out of the voluminous memorabilia of his grandfather’s life story.” This is the first in a series called Family Matters: The Films of Alan Berliner — films and discussions taking place as part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas and Yale Summer Film Institute. S A T U R D A Y

Inflate your tires and join a bike tour of the East Coast Greenway North. Travel north from New Haven to Cheshire and learn about plans to connect the former rail trail to Northampton, Massachusetts. Visit historic Lock 12 in Cheshire before returning to New Haven. (Helmets required.) Free. New Haven Green, New Haven. 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Bring the kids to a Children’s Film Festival featuring award-winning independent short films for a young audience. There will be refreshments and live entertainment after the show. For children ages 3 to 10. The audience may come and go as needed. Free. Yale Center for British Art, 1080 Chapel St. Two showings: 11 a.m.-noon and 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Help to build Box City. Young city planners are invited to construct buildings and neighborhoods out of craft supplies and boxes (supplies provided). This interactive activity explores basic principles of design, sustainability, and urban planning. Free. Saturday, noon-5 p.m.; and Sunday noon-5 p.m.

Enjoy an outdoor concert of R&B, jazz, and pop music featuring Grammy Award-winning vocalist and pianist Lalah Hathaway with guest Ruben Studdard, winner of the second season of “American Idol.” Free. New Haven Green, New Haven. 7 p.m.

S U N D A Y 

Come listen to From Electric Car to Obsolete Highways. Writer Jack Hitt will speak about his vision of the future of cars — the self-piloted flying car and a future when highways become as obsolete as the Santa Fe Trail. Free. Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel St. 3 p.m.

Spend an evening on the Green listening to Martha Redbone perform a cornucopia of roots music — folk, country, piedmont blues, gospel, honkytonk, bluegrass, soul, and traditional Native. The evening will open with music from Cry You One, featuring music and dances from the cultures of South Louisiana’s vanishing coastal communities. Free. New Haven Green, New Haven. 7 p.m.
