Bushes and Clintons are honorary chairs of 2014 Yale Day of Service on May 10

Four of Yale’s most distinguished alumni — George H.W. Bush ’48, George W. Bush ’68, William Jefferson Clinton ’73 J.D., and Hillary Rodham Clinton ’73 J.D. — are serving as honorary chairs of this year’s global Yale Day of Service on Saturday, May 10.

Launched by the Association of Yale Alumni in 2009, the annual Day of Service celebrates and catalyzes alumni community service throughout the year and around the world. This year’s Day of Service features more than 250 total sites in 38 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and more than a dozen international countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. All alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and students are welcome to participate and to invite their families and neighbors to join, as well.

President Bill Clinton noted in a video message for the program, “Yalies are deeply committed to service and to building a world of shared responsibility and shared prosperity.”  President George W. Bush noted in his video message, “From the beginning, Yale and its people have been dedicated to serving a cause greater than self.”

Clinton added, “Hillary and I are proud to be part of the Yale alumni family and proud to support the global Yale Day of Service and its call to work together to make the world a better place for everyone — on May 10 and on everyday year round.” Bush noted, “Yalies are citizens, not spectators. Yale alumni hear the call of duty, take a stand, and care for our neighbors. The annual Yale Day of Service celebrates this bond of service that we share as alumni.”

In a message to all Yale alumni, Yale President Peter Salovey ’86 Ph.D., wrote that “the entire Yale family shares a bond, regardless of degree, class year, or hometown: giving back to others in service is part of our culture and traditions.” Salovey urged all alumni and friends of Yale to participate in the Day of Service, noting, “[W]e are called to share with our communities the gifts we received at Yale, wherever we reside around the world.”

Yale Vice President Linda Koch Lorimer ’77 J.D., recently wrote to all faculty, students, and staff of Yale to encourage their participation as well, noting that there are 22 sites in New Haven and another 13 in other areas of Connecticut. “I have found the Day of Service is a great way to meet other Yale colleagues and our neighbors,” Lorimer wrote, “and to make a positive contribution to the region.”
