Chief Ronnell Higgins of the Yale University Police Department (YPD) invites members of the Yale and New Haven communities to attend the Citizen’s Police Academy, which begins Tuesday, March 25.

Designed to increase the public’s understanding and awareness of police operations and responsibilities, the program includes sessions on investigative services (“CSI vs. Reality”): patrol procedures; personal safety; emergency preparedness; and firearms. Other highlights include a tour of the facility with a look at its state-of-the-art communications/technology, and a chance to meet Whitney, the bomb detection dog. The course also incorporates classroom training and hands-on activities.

“All of the sessions contained a great mix of both interesting and educational information,” commented a past participant. “I perceive the Police Department as a much friendlier place than I thought…and was very impressed with the high level of dedication and professionalism everyone there has.”

This six-week program is free of charge and runs every Tuesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. through April 29. Classes are held at YPD headquarters, 101 Ashmun St.

A two-step registration process is required. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. First, applicants should fill out the online application and registration form. The YPD will contact each applicant to arrange for a criminal history check. The permission form for the criminal history check and waiver of risk form is on the Citizen’s Police Academy website. Upon completion of the process, an email confirmation will be sent by YPD verifying placement in the academy.

Registration deadline is Monday, March 17. Space is limited; participation is on a first come first served basis.
