Listen to the Yale Symphony Orchestra: A World Premiere and the Firebird. The world premiere of Kathryn Alexander’s cello concerto, “Become the Wind,” will be performed by Ole Akahoshi. Other pieces include Handel’s Concerto Grosso in C Major; “Alexander’s Feast,” conducted by assistant conductor and music student Jacob Joyce; Sibelius’s tone poem, “The Oceanides,” commissioned for the Norfolk Festival; and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Listen to the Yale Russian Chorus Alumni Gala 60th Anniversary Concert featuring over 100 men’s voices in Russian liturgical, folk, and composed song. The performance will also feature a guest appearance by the Yale Women’s Slavic Chorus, a folk ensemble singing music from Eastern Europe, Georgia, and the Balkans. Free. Attend the Yale Camerata and Yale Band concert Poems for a Sunday Afternoon. Tawnie Olson’s “Les Voyelles,” for cello, percussion, and chamber chorus, takes Rimbaud’s celebrated poem as the starting point for a wide-ranging exploration of vocal and instrumental color, evoking the sounds of buzzing flies, angelic trumpets, and Javanese gamelan. And coming up in the week ahead …

Join the university in observing Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11. The ceremony will include remarks from Yale faculty and students and the traditional laying of a wreath in front of the alumni war memorial. The Veterans Day Brass Ensemble will offer a musical salute to each of the nation’s five service branches.
