At Yale Rep: Caryl Churchill’s ‘savagely funny play’

“Owners,” a play about an obsession with power written by noted English playwright Caryl Churchill, is the next offering in the Yale Repertory Theatre’s 2013-2014 season.

Described by the organizers as a “savagely funny play,” “Owners” centers on real estate agent Marion, who is too busy buying property in the booming North London real estate market to notice that her husband wants her dead.

“Owners” is directed by OBIE Award-winner Evan Yionoulis. The play will be staged Oct. 25–Nov. 16 at the Yale Repertory Theatre, 1120 Chapel St. Opening Night is Thursday, Oct. 31.

The cast of “Owners” includes Anthony Cochrane, Joby Earle, Sarah Manton, Brenda Meaney, Tommy Schrider, and Alex Trow.

The production features scenic design by Carmen Martinez, costumes by Seth Bodie, lighting by Benjamin Ehrenreich, sound by Joel Abbott, dramaturgy by Hugh Farrell, vocal and dialect coaching by Beth McGuire, fight direction by Rick Sordelet, and stage management by Sonja Thorson.

Churchill is author of “Cloud Nine” and “Top Girls.” Yionoulis is a resident director at Yale Rep where her productions include “Stones in His Pockets,” “The Master Builder,” and “Richard II.” Her New York credits include Adrienne Kennedy’s “Ohio State Murders,” winner of the Lucille Lortel Award, and “Three Days of Rain,” recipient of an OBIE Award. She is adjunct professor in Yale School of Drama’s Department of Acting.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, with additional 2 p.m. matinees on Saturdays, Nov. 2, 9 (an open-captioned performance), and 16 (an audio-described show), and on Wednesday, Nov. 6. There is one Monday performance, on Oct. 28. Other special events include a reception for senior citizens at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and Talk Back conversations with members of the cast and crew following the Saturday matinee show on Nov. 2.
