Yale International Relations Association (YIRA) will present a screening of “Rising from Ashes,” an award-winning documentary about the creation and growth of the Rwandan National Cycling Team.

The film documents the steep challenges faced by the team on its six-year journey to the Olympic games in London: The riders are recovering from the genocide in 1994, the nation is gradually rebuilding its infrastructure from that era, and the world of competitive cycling is completely new to the country.

Following the screening, there will be a question-and-answer session with the film production team and the team coach, Jock Boyer — the first American cyclist ever to compete in the Tour de France.

This event is part of the Global Perspectives Symposia (GPS), a YIRA program that meets weekly to debate cutting-edge perspectives on international relations. GPS aims to engage students in constructive discussion with various leaders, including Olympian medalists, international musicians, U.N. peacekeepers, ambassadors, and CEOs.

“Rising from Ashes” will be shown Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. in Rm. 101, Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St. It is free and open to the public.
