Her research focuses on the application of the green chemistry and green engineering principles to innovative design of products, processes, and systems; specifically, her work is focused on enabling the integrated biorefinery through advances in energy-efficient extraction and conversion of renewable resources and the development of novel and sustainable water treatment technologies for the removal of inorganic contaminants such as arsenic and selenium.

Zimmerman received her B.S. from the University of Virginia and was awarded a joint Ph.D. in environmental engineering and natural resource policy from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

The Yale researcher, who co-authored “Environmental Engineering: Fundamentals, Sustainability, Design,” joined the Yale faculty in 2007. She previously served as an engineer and program manager in the Office of Research and Development at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where she managed sustainability research grants and created and launched EPA’s P3 (People, Prosperity, and the Planet) Award program. She was an assistant professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia-Charlottesville prior to joining Yale’s faculty.

Zimmerman is associate editor of Environmental Science and Technology. In addition, she serves on the editorial board of Sustainability: Science, Practice, and Policy. Her numerous awards and honors include the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize awarded by American Society of Civil Engineering in 2012 and an EPA Gold Medal for Commendable Service in 2006. She was a member of the National Academy of Engineering’s “Frontiers in Engineering” program in 2005 and the “Frontiers in Engineering Education” 2009.

Zimmerman’s post is effective through Dec. 31, 2015.
