Assembly brought together alumni from Yale and Tecnológico de Monterrey

There was a decidedly international twist to the Yale Alumni Assembly held Nov. 8-10. This year, for the first time, the Yale graduates were joined by alumni of Mexico’s Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Every year the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) brings together University graduates from across the nation and the world for discussions on a particular theme. Tecnológico de Monterrey also hosts an annual Alumni Association President’s meeting. This year, the Mexican university coordinated its gathering to coincide with the AYA Assembly and held the meeting at Yale. More than 30 delegates from Tecnológico de Monterrey participated alongside Yale alumni during the weekend.

The theme of the weekend program was “Answering the call to service: alumni volunteers in the global community.” Discussions focused on ways to expand collaborations on programs such as the international service trips, the Yale Day of Service, and the Yale Global Alumni Leadership Exchange (YaleGALE) program.

“We invited Tecnológico de Monterrey alumni to join us for our meeting this year as we saw it as an invaluable opportunity to share best practices and bring our alumni together to think about ways to develop sustainable volunteer programs in the U.S. and in Latin America,” said João Aleixo, associate director for Latin America in the Yale Office of International Affairs.

“Tecnológico de Monterrey and Yale have developed numerous collaborations focused on education and public health for students and scholars,” said David Huerta, director of the International Liaison Office in New Haven for Tecnológico de Monterrey. “Bringing our alumni into the mix with our shared focus on service seemed like a natural extension of our collaborations.”

Yale has a growing relationship with the Tecnológico de Monterrey (Tec), which began in 2005 with the Tec Summer Program at Yale University. The relationship was further expanded when Open Yale Courses were added to Tec’s Knowledge Hub, as well as through collaborations on Yale Week in Mexico, Bulldogs in Monterrey internship program, and the addition of Tec to the Yale Visitor International Student Program in 2012. Tec is one of the largest and most well-respected educational institutions in Mexico.
