The University will observe Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 12, on Beinecke Plaza at 12:30 p.m. The ceremony will include remarks from Yale faculty and students, and the traditional laying of a wreath in front of the alumni war memorial.
Christopher R. Howell ’14, who served eight years with the Australian Army, and Law School student Andrew C. Crawford, a Navy veteran, will be among those participating. There are nearly 60 student veterans or active duty military at Yale, according to University Secretary Kimberly Goff-Crews, who oversees the ceremony. Veterans or active duty students are in at least seven of the University’s professional schools, as well as the Graduate School and Yale College.
Also participating in the Veterans Day ceremony will be Colonel Scott E. Manning, commander of Yale’s Air Force ROTC detachment; Colonel Timothy J. McAteer of the U.S. Army, a fellow at the Jackson Institute; Lieutenant Colonel Craig R. Wonson of the U.S. Marine Corps, a fellow in Yale’s International Security Studies Program; and emeritus professor and former Trumbull master Harry B. Adams, B.A. ’45W, B.D. ’51, who served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945. Members of the Yale University Police Department will form the ceremony’s honor guard.
The Veterans Day Brass Ensemble, composed of students from the School of Music, will offer a musical salute to each of the nation’s five service branches. Other School of Music graduates will provide a choral backdrop for the laying of the wreath.
In the event of rain, the Veterans Day ceremony will take place in Woolsey Hall.
