Yale libraries have started "the countdown to the 2012 summer Olympic Games in London with posters and images from past games around the world."

The poster shown here celebrates the re-establishment of the Olympic games in 1894 and is taken from "A Century of Olympic Posters" by Timmers, held in the Beinecke Library's Olympic collection.

The 1916 Olympic Games were originally scheduled to be hosted in Berlin, but with the outbreak of WWI, they were moved to Amsterdam. Officials expected the war to end and the Games to be held as scheduled, but when the conflict continued to grow, they were cancelled entirely. They were next held in 1920 in Antwerp.

The Olympic Games were last held in London in 1948. They were particularly significant because the summer Olympics had not been held in over 10 years (the 1940 and 1944 Olympics had been cancelled because of WWII). As with the 1948 London Olympics, the 2012 London Olympics will help celebrate global efforts towards peace.
