“The Library is the Heart of the University” reads an inscription at the entrance to the Sterling Memorial Library. Valentine’s Day seems an appropriate time to celebrate that heart, which keeps Yale’s teaching and research missions going strong.
By all measures, the Yale University Library is a very big heart. It holds approximately 13 million volumes and information in all media, from ancient papyri to early printed books to electronic databases. These are housed in 18 buildings and overseen by nearly 500 staff members, who work to collect, organize, preserve, and provide access to these materials — all for the benefit of Yale’s faculty and students, as well as the numerous scholars who travel from around the world to use the library’s resources.
