Speeches, performances and videos on the theme “A Twist of Fate” will be featured at TEDxYale 2012, which will take place 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, in Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall, corner of Grove and Prospect streets.
TED — which stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design — is a non-profit organization with the motto “Ideas Worth Spreading.” Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support “world-changing ideas,” with TED events taking place at venues around the globe. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. The best TED talks are then posted at TED.com.
At TEDxYale 2012, an independently organized event licensed by TED, a diverse group of Yale students, faculty, and alumni will share their vision for the world with an audience of 400 students. Speakers will include Yale philosophy professor Thomas Pogge; former visiting professor Enrique Norten, founder of the firm Ten Arquitectos; and alumni Matthew Brimer and Brad Hargreaves, co-founders of General Assembly.
“In the spirit of TED, we have invited innovators and pioneers from throughout the Yale community to inspire both Yale and the world towards new action,” said Miles Grimshaw ‘13, co-curator of TEDxYale 2012. The full list of speakers for TEDxYale follows.
TEDxYale recently released a video trailer for the event. The director, Emmy Pickett, said, “I made the trailer with several concepts in mind starting with what TED is all about: communication. It is set to Morse code which was developed by Samuel Morse, a Yale graduate.”
