Yale University today announced undergraduate term bill increases and projected financial aid improvements for the 2011-12 academic year. The Yale College term bill — covering tuition, room and board — will increase 5.8% to $52,700. Meanwhile, the University expects financial aid expenditures to increase 8% to $117 million.

With these changes, Yale’s term bill is expected to remain lower than the majority of Ivy League institutions.

For the 2011-2012 academic year, Yale College tuition will be $40,500, the room charge will be $6,700 and board will be $5,500. The average Yale scholarship will be $36,000. Yale remains committed to ensuring that all admitted students, regardless of family finances, can attend Yale College.

“These measured increases help us preserve both the extraordinary quality of a Yale College education and a far-reaching financial aid commitment matched by few other institutions,” Yale Provost Peter Salovey said. “An increase in the term bill is necessary, but financial aid students will receive scholarship awards that cover the increase, and it’s important to note that the education of every Yale student is subsidized by the generosity of donors who support the University.”

Yale offers fully funded need-based financial aid and for 2011-2012 has expanded its full coverage to families with incomes of $65,000 and below. Yale financial aid packages do not require a loan; however, all students receiving financial aid are expected to contribute to their education. This “self-help” expectation will be $3,000 for 2011-2012. Students may choose to earn the self-help contribution through campus jobs, which pay an average of $12.50 an hour.

Over the last decade, the number of students receiving scholarship grants from Yale has increased from 36% in academic year 2001 to the current 57%. The total aid budget over that time has increased by nearly 300%, compared to a 51% increase in the term bill.
