Mia Reinoso Genoni, a Mellon Special Collections Humanities Postdoctoral Fellow and a lecturer in the Humanities Program, has been named the next dean of Berkeley College (BK).

She succeeds Kevin Hicks will be leaving the deanship at the end of this academic year for a new position as associate head of school and dean of faculty at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut.

Since coming to Yale in 2008, Genoni has taught undergraduate seminars, and has read or advised senior essays here in both the Humanities Program and the Department of the History of Art. She previously taught and advised students at the University of Richmond and at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.

“She has been praised as a teacher who continually engages her students, both in and out of the classroom, in ways that are challenging and encouraging at the same time,” said Yale College Dean Mary Miller, who made the appointment after consulting with BK Master Marvin Chun and a committee of fellows and students from the residential college.

Genoni’s teaching and research interests center on architecture and urbanism, architectural representation, the history and theory of the book, and word-image studies. She has presented numerous papers at professional conferences and is the author of several published articles and reviews. Yale University Press has accepted the prospectus of her book, “The Invention of Renaissance Architecture: Filarete and the Architettonico Libro.”

She earned a B.A. magna cum laude jointly in history of art and architecture, and in English and American literature from Harvard College; and her M.A. and Ph.D. in the history of art and archaeology from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

Genoni will move in to the Dean’s Suite in BK this summer along with Ming Tea, her Pekingese. Her personal interests include yoga, hiking, cross-country skiing, ice skating and white water rafting.

“She is a great fan of mystery and sci-fi novels and films, and looks forward to learning of the artistic, athletic and cultural interests of Berkeley students,” said Miller. “She will, I know, make many significant and positive contributions to the life of the college, and Master Chun and I hope you will join us in welcoming her to Berkeley.”
