Yale Panel to Discuss NAS Report on Women in Academic Science and Engineering

“Beyond Bias and Barriers: The National Academy of Sciences Report on Women in Academic Science and Engineering” will be the topic of a panel discussion to be presented by the Women Faculty Forum at Yale on December 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Rosenfeld Hall at 109 Grove St.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will open with refreshments at 6:30, and the panel will follow at 7 p.m. An RSVP for planning purposes at (203) 432-8847 or wff@yale.edu is requested.

On September 18, 2006, the National Academy of Sciences released a report on the status of women in academic science and engineering. Panelists will present and discuss this report, outline key recommendations and examine some of the specific research cited to clarify the data on which the report is based.

The panelists will offer commentary that highlights the importance of this issue, its impact on the future of economic growth and science leadership, and the effect on people’s lives.

The panelists include:

• Joan Steitz, Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, who is part of the Committee on Maximizing the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering, which wrote the report under the oversight of the Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy;
